In the biggest upset of the year so far, Badou Jack dethroned recent champion Anthony Dirrell of his WBC Super Middleweight Title in Chicago, Il in the main event of PBC on Spike TV main card. The fight was essentially a summary of the whole PBC on Spike card, bizarre with fighters looking a tad bit timid to engage at times. The fight began with Dirrell pressing the action and looking to test Jack’s chin as stated he would at the weigh in the day prior after he mocked Jack for being knocked out by a “journeyman” in a showcase fight. The fight appeared to be all Dirrell until the second round, when a right hand hit Dirrell that seemed to stagger him and change his opinion of Jack’s power.

From this point on Dirrell appeared to only be looking for knockout as if the hard punch had triggered something innate in him to hurt Jack. The problem is for the three or four rounds that followed, Jack moved well and essentially outboxed Dirrell who was coming in aggressive throwing away fundamentals. Another thing that seemed to be off putting for Dirrell was Jack implementing the John Ruiz jab and grab, so when Dirrell would work his way inside Jack would hold until the ref broke the two up. Dirrell was so out of whack that in the middle rounds he switched to southpaw to try a new angle against Jack’s odd style.

As the fight moved along it was clear that the lack of straight punches hurt Dirrell’s chances at victory as Jack was countering the wide looping shots of Dirrell easily and working around the pressure. In the end, the judges scored the bout 114-114, 116-112, 115-113 in favor of a majority decision victory for Badou Jack who is now the WBC super middleweight champion. Jack is now the second member of The Money Team to hold a belt as Mickey Bey picked up the IBF lightweight title last September in a hotly debated split decision win over Miguel Vasquez.

Badou Jack will defend his title next against George Groves, who is the current number one contender for his title.
