Jessie Vargas “Pat Russell saved Tim Bradley’s career”

An angry Jessie Vargas took the post-fight press conference to give his take on his fight with Timothy Bradley and the last ten seconds that will be talked about for weeks to come. Let’s recap in case you missed it and begin with the facts. Jessie Vargas hurt Tim Bradley with 10 seconds left in the fight, referee Pat Russell stepped in for some reason we assume thinking the fight was over not stopping the action. Vargas had thought he had won via stoppage until the decision was read and on top of this Bradley was dominating the majority of the fight, a fight in which Vargas looked flat and unable to adjust in.

Vargas took the press conference to make a bold statement “Pat Russell saved Tim Bradley’s career.” Vargas said in the press room for StubHub Center. The sentiment carried over to Vargas’ trainer Erik Morales who cited an example with his brother who knocked someone down four times, but because his trainer thought the round was over. The end result was a disqualification when his trainer prematurely entered the ring.

Whether you agree or disagree, it is true that Vargas should of gotten the chance to have the ability to try and finish the fight. Nonetheless, realistically if I think about how the fight had of played out if it continued I am hard pressed to believe Vargas stops him. The big take away is that Top Rank has limited welterweights and are not always the most keen at moving people around, so is it possible that we see this bout again in the fall?
