Mayweather dominates Berto in “final fight”

Floyd Mayweather (49-0 26KOS) cruised to a one-sided vintage performance over Andre Berto (30-4 23KOs) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.  After the fight, Mayweather explained that this is indeed his final bout as he stated “…for nineteen years, I wouldn’t be able to do it without these fans…it doesn’t matter if I hurt my left or my right hand tonight, [I am] retired.” Mayweather furthered that “…you got to know when to hang it up” in reference to why he is retiring.

Mayweather didn’t throw a right hand in the first round as he easily out pointed with Berto with his lead hand. Berto who appeared passive for the early going of the bout and simply couldn’t cut off the ring as he struggled to throw punches let alone appear threatening. The moments of Berto’s brilliance were few and far between as missed punches forced the crowd to “oooohhh” and “awwwwww” over what could of been.

In the third, Berto nearly landed a right that set up a trip of Mayweather that got the crowd involved in the action as onlookers thought Mayweather may have been dropped. Berto kept coming closer to Mayweather as it appeared he might close the distance, but it never quit happened as rounds passed by with Mayweather simply outclassing a game Berto.

Berto tried to press the action and made the fight engaging and entertaining, but even at age 38, Mayweather once again proved he is the best of his era if not maybe outright. It a relatively speedy 12 round affair Mayweather put on a timeless performance against a fighter who might not of been on his level, but offered the power to spoil his evening nonetheless.

In the final three rounds, the fight becoming a bit tougher to watch as referee Kenny Bayless had to stop the action to tell the fighter to stop talking to each other. With ten seconds left, Mayweather taunted Berto who couldn’t do anything about it.

In the end, Mayweather won the bout by way of unanimous decision with the scores of 117-111, 118-110 and 120-108.
