Ortiz stops Thompson, Vargas KOs Ali to win title

Heavyweight Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz (25-0, 22 KOs) scored a sixth round KO game journeyman Tony “The Tiger” Thompson (40-7, 27 KOs) on Saturday night at the DC Armory in Washington, D.C. Ortiz dropped Thompson in rounds one and three, then put him down for the count in round six. The fight was not competitive as expected as Thompson had started his camp by his own admission only six weeks prior as the 40 year-old plus man struggled against the more skillful athlete in Ortiz.

Welterweight Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) scored an impressive ninth round TKO upset over previously unbeaten Sadam Ali (22-1, 13 KOs) to win the vacant WBO welterweight world championship. In one of the best bouts of the year, Vargas dropped Ali at the end of the eighth round in a fight that had been essentially dead even. Ali was hurt in the ninth and after being dropped again was stopped by the referee who decided Ali couldn’t defend himself.

In the opening bout, Colombian featherweight Oscar Escandon (25-2, 17 KOs) who is trained by Ruben “Mad Dog” Guerrero,  recovered from a second round knockdown to stop Robinson “Robin Hood” Castellanos (23-11, 13 KOs) in round seven to claim the vacant WBC interim title.
