Manuel Avila stated, “I am excited to get back in the ring and show people I have what it takes to become a world champion. This is another stepping stone in my career and winning the IBA Americas Featherweight Title will get me closer to my goal. I have been working on my strength, footwork and making sure to throw more punches to make sure I give fans an exciting night of boxing. I know Ankrah is tough fighter, but I am up for the challenge and will use all my assets to show that I am ready to make my mark in the featherweight division.”

“Manuel ‘Tino’ Avila is a superb fighter who is laser-focused on becoming a top star in the sport, and with his work ethic and talent, I have no doubt that he will achieve that,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Tino is the type of fighter every promoter wants to work with; he’s dedicated to his craft, trains hard and has what it takes to become a world champion. I believe 2016 will be an important year in his career, and fans and the media should take note.”

A native of Fairfield, Avila will have another chance to obtain a second title in less than a year. Last August, Avila scored a technical knockout victory over former world title challenger Yoandris “El Nino” Salinas to take home the interim NABF Super Bantamweight Title. Since then, Avila has won unanimous decision victories over seasoned Mexican warrior Jose Angel “Pepe” Beranza and former WBC Silver Featherweight Champion Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado of Managua, Nicaragua. As a fighter that has challenged opponents around the world, Prosper Ankrah, who is currently fighting out of Silver Spring, Md. by way of Accra, Ghana, is still looking to find himself at the top of the featherweight division. Ankrah’s previous experience includes six different titles bouts, most recently fighting for the vacant WBO International Bantamweight Title in March 2015 against Japan’s Ryo Akaho. In his last fight, Ankrah took on the international champion from Veracruz, MX, Tomas “Gusano” Rojas where Ankrah dominated Rojas by sending him down to the canvas in the first round only to lose the fight in the fourth round due to injury to Ankrah’s left arm. Ankrah stated in a phone conversation, “the hardest thing has been leaving my family behind in Africa and all my sacrifice is not going to be in vain. Avila better be ready because I am bringing the belt home with me.”
