Deontay Wilder-Chris Arreola media workout and observations

Today, heavyweight world champion Deontay Wilder, two-time heavyweight title challenger Chris Arreola, undefeated welterweight Sammy Vasquez Jr. and Olympic Gold medalist Felix Diaz participated in a media workout Wednesday as they near their respective Premier Boxing Champions on FOX and FOX Deportes matchups taking place Saturday, July 16 from Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

Our friends over at FightHub posted the full coverage of the event which you can watch below, many thanks to the great Marcos Villegas, who is responsible for these videos.

Televised coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and features unbeaten rising star Erickson Lubin battling once beaten brawler Ivan Montero in addition to the Wilder vs. Arreola and Vasquez Jr. vs. Diaz bout. The televised action will switch over to FS1 and FOX Deportes immediately following the conclusion of the FOX telecast.

Lukie’s observations

  1. Arreola only shadowboxed for two rounds and complained of the conditions of Alabama. For a fighter who has not looked good in his last several outings to see such a marginal performance at the media day is troubling especially since Daniel Lim of  TheBoxingCoalition, stated that Arreola couldn’t spar three complete rounds a week ago in San Diego against an unknown foe. What does this mean? Well, that could mean Arreola could be grossly out of shape for last chance in boxing.
  2. Is this fight punishment for Arreola? Arreola could have easily lost his last three bouts that all seemingly were positioning him for this bout. The fact that the bout was made last minute after Alexander Povetkin failed a drug-test seemingly tells me that the promotion or those responsible for making the bout don’t see the fight ever being bigger than this and with Arreola recently failing a drug test (marijuana) and getting dropped by less foes, this seems to have the makes of something nasty.
  3. Is this the fight Wilder silences some doubters? Bermane Stiverne is still beloved by those on the internet that love to call fighters cruel names, but Stiverne’s biggest win was against Arreola, twice. Though it is doubtful that the internet fans of boxing who are more happy mocking then enjoying will take kindly to Wilder, this also has the makings of a brutal knockout if Wilder is who those of us who believe in him think he is.
  4. Wilder is much bigger than Arreola and dramatically faster. Wilder holds every advantage in this fight with Arreola’s best chance would be using a double or a triple jab to push Wilder straight back to land an overhand right when Wilder leaves his chin on a flagpole. Wilder appears to be game planning for this as he spent a large portion of his mitt workout practicing a check left hook, a punch that can punish an overaggressive foe. It also appears that the range in which Wilder was hitting mitts also didn’t replicate full extension on punches, I am not sure whether that is purposeful or not. The lead left uppercut might be a punch Wilder uses to in correlation with an overhand right.
