U.S. Olympic Update: Hernandez wins bronze, Balderas loses controversial

The great start for Team USA Boxing is over as Friday was bitter sweat for the Olympic squad.

For starters, Nico Hernandez lost in the semi-finals to Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan in a close, but somewhat clear fight to score that was very high level. Though some thought Hernandez won, the feeling was that Hernandez started to late and couldn’t really pick it up in time to win the bout outright.

Hernandez with the loss light flyweight bronze medalist of the 2016 Olympic Games.

In a tougher bout to swallow, Karlos Balderas lost his quarterfinals match to Lazaro Alvarez of Cuba. The bout saw Balderas not get credit for much of his activity as well as dropping Alvarez in the second round and have the punch being ruled a slip and somehow still losing the round.

This afternoon Mikaela Mayer makes her Olympic debut in the women’s lightweight division.
