Easter defeats Shafikov, J-Rock stops foe in comeback fight

IBF lightweight world champion Robert Easter (20-0, 14 KOs) albeit with a lot of controversy against #1 contender Denis Shafikov (38-3-1, 20 KOs) on Friday night at the half-full Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio.

Easter started strong, but the tricky southpaw continued to pressure him and seemingly was on his way to victory by the 12th and final round as the fight seemed close.

The judges, on the other hand, saw a different fight as two judges gave Easter every round with only one giving the bout a competitive score of 116-112.

The putrid scoring of fights was a theme as hometown fighter Jamonty Clark (12-0 7KOs) at best struggled against Ivan Golub (13-1 11KOs) including Golub scoring a knockdown of Clark. Somehow Clark was awarded the bout to him as his hometown fans booed him loudly.

On the televised undercard, junior middleweight who fought at a catchweight for this bout, Julian “J Rock” Williams (23-1-1, 15 KOs) stopped  Joshua Conley (14-2-1, 9 KOs) in the seventh round.

This was Williams first bout since losing a world title fight to Jermall Charlo last December.
