Rene Alvarado stops Roger Gutierrez on LA Fight Club

Veteran journeyman super featherweight Rene Alvarado pulled another upset in his career filled with resurgences as he soundly beat Roger Gutierrez (15-1-1 12KOs) at the Belasco theater in downtown Los Angeles. Gutierrez who recently signed with Golden Boy Promotions and was fighting for the first time in the United States with all of his other bout taking place in his native Venezuela, showed he may not be on the world class level. Alvarado battered Gutierrez from pillar to post cutting him open in the fifth and finally stopping him in the seventh round.
The judges saw the bout 80-71, 80-71 and 79-72 for Valerio. In a wild fight of the year contender, Edgar Valerio (11-0 6KOs) was pushed to the brink as he knocked down Jairo Ochoa (18-12 9KOs) in the first round and seemingly had another showcase win. Things would change as Valerio was dropped early in the 2nd round only to drop Ochoa fifteen seconds later. The fight would progress with Valerio somewhat boxing, but at times recklessly throwing punches that asked to be countered, but his foe was unable to.

One of the best prospects in boxing, super flyweight Joshua Franco (12-0 6KOs), continued his winning ways as he picked up a six round unanimous decision over lesser known Antonio Rodriguez (11-17-1 5KOs). The scores were 60-54, all in favor of Franco.
