Yuriorkis Gamboa beats Jason Sosa after getting dropped

In an opening bout to the HBO boxing telecast from The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York, saw veteran former contender Yuriorkis Gamboa (27 get a hotly contested majority decision over Jason Sosa (20-3-4 15KOs).

In the first few rounds, Gamboa landed the cleaner shots and showed the higher level of boxing skill with Sosa threw at a higher volume and had the more cinematic punches. In a bout that seemingly never took, saw Gamboa who took the fight on fifteen days, fight smart and in spurts frustrating Sosa who seemed to want to bang.

In the sixth round, Gamboa pretty clearly tired out as his hands dropped and his involvement in the action was minuscule. The seventh saw Gamboa hit the floor from an overhand right from Jason Sosa that came over Gamboa’s jab. Gamboa was also warned for holding in the same round.

The fight seemingly concluded at a lackluster pace with the assumption being that Sosa had just edged, while those that assumed were wrong as Yuriorkis Gamboa pulled off a majority decision win over Jason Sosa via the scores of 94-94, 95-93 and 96-92.

94-94 | 95-93 | 96-92 Yuriorkis Gamboa MD10 Jason Sosa
