Prospect of the Year (under 15 fights): Vergil Ortiz Jr.

Super lightweight Vergil Ortiz has star written all over him as he has won all eleven of his professional fights by way of knockout and his last one being the most impressive beating Roberto Ortiz.

Now like all prospects, the caliber of opposition has been limited and rightfully so since Ortiz is young and a promising fighter, but he is doing what he needs to do with opponents he is given, and how do we say that about young fighters.

Ortiz recently moved relocated his training camp from Joel Diaz’s gym in Indio, CA, to Robert Garcia’s Boxing Academy in Riverside, CA, and now seems poised to be introduced to the masses with the new expansive Golden Boy Promotions/DAZN  deal as Ortiz and Ryan Garcia seem to be the two blue-chip prospects, Golden Boy Promotions has.

What impresses me so much about Ortiz is not the power, but the way he thinks inside of the ring. Ortiz lands clean, which allows for his power to show, often with young fighters, they’ll rush looking for the knockout Ortiz is very patient waits for his openings.
