Rodriguez upsets Gesta, Blair Cobbs wins title – Avila gets a draw

Super lightweight Juan Rodriguez (30-7, 26 KOs), promoted by Northern California promoter, Paco Damian, pulled off a massive upset in stopping Mercito Gesta (32-3-2, 17 KOs) in the ninth round on Thursday night at the Avalon in Hollywood, California on the Golden Boy main event.

The bout was competitive the whole way through, but Gesta appeared to come out strong, but was met with Rodriguez, who was willing to trade with him. By the sixth round, Gesta had been cut and the fight was very close. The straight left that landed in the later rounds, ended up stopping Gesta at 2:55 of the ninth round.

In the co-feature bout, Blair Cobbs (10-0-1, 6 KOs) of Las Vegas, Nevada won the junior NABF welterweight title via unanimous decision over Ferdinand Kerobyan (11-1, 9 KOs). Kerobyan was cut in the opening round by a head clash. Cobbs used tremendous distance and kept Kerobyan off balance and chasing him. Kerobyan rallied late, but didn’t pick up enough early rounds to get the nod.

The judges saw the bout 79-73, 77-75 and 77-75 for Cobbs.

Fairfield, California’s Manuel Avila (23-1-1, 8 KOs) returned to the ring as he and Jose Gonzalez (23-7-1, 13 KOs) and fought to a draw in an eight round featherweight bout. Avila used his distance to keep Gonzalez off of him, Gonzalez would plod forward and apply a lot of pressure. The later rounds Avila’s punch output dropped and Gonzalez took full advantage.

The judges scored the bout 77-75 for Avila, 77-75 for Gonzalez, and 76-and 76.
