Giovannie Gonzalez Eyes Paulie Malignaggi Fight In 2022
Professional boxer and promoter Giovannie Gonzalez of Stockton, California has found himself in a social media feud with former two-division world champion Paulie Malignaggi, as the two traded bars on September 23rd on social media account of Celebrity Boxing’s Instagram profile, as they promoted a fight between Paulie Malignaggi and social media star Corey B.
The bout seemed like a pipe-dream, and nothing more than a misunderstanding, until the two came toe-to-toe in Las Vegas, Nevada in November 2021.
Oddly enough, I saw some of the interaction, as I saw Giovannie Gonzalez minutes before he ran into Malignaggi on fight week in Vegas for Canelo vs Caleb Plant. Gonzalez excused himself from a conversation we were having to go confront Malignaggi. The two had a ten-minute conversation, that was friendly not heated, but saw Gonzalez confront Malignaggi about the social media post, that at the time, I was unaware of.
“I asked him where was his energy that he had on the internet about disrespecting me, and told him to talk that smack to my face,” said Gonzalez who appeared frustrated at the lack of respect being shown to him by Malignaggi. “I am a very friendly and professional person, Paulie is Paulie, and he tried to stand up for himself, he just put himself in an awkward position based on his comments.”
For those unaware, Malignaggi fought and beat YouTube/TikToker Corey B earlier this year in Celebrity Boxing, and has been involved with bare-knuckle boxing, as well as one of the announcers for BYB Extreme, after his professional boxing career ended, and he parted ways with Showtime Championship Boxing as a broadcaster.
We were told on the basis of anonymity that Celebrity Boxing has interest in making a bout between Giovannie Gonzalez, and a possible venue for the fight could even be Stockton, California, a boxing hot-bed that has seen a recent revival with Top Rank Inc’s Gabriel Flores Jr. selling out the Stockton Arena in 2019.
“I want to make this fight, and bring a great fight to Stockton, California for the fans to see,” said Gonzalez. “I think this is the type of bout that would get a lot of Northern California celebrities to attend the fight, and we have a fight rich history. Paulie is a former world champion, and beyond that he has a personality that whether you like or hate him, you will want to watch either way, and Stockton embraces those type of fighters as well.”
