Ramirez, Vences win in front 13,000 plus in Fresno
U.S. Olympian and current NABF champion Jose Ramirez (16-0, 12 KOs) won an eight round unanimous decision against a very tough Johnny Garcia (19-3-1, 11 KOs) on Saturday night in a front of a 13,128 fans, the largest crowd of an UniMas boxing broadcast ever. The super lightweight clash saw the underdog Garcia drop Ramirez with a counter right hand in round two and when Ramirez was far too eager to walk inside and trade with Garcia. The felt resulted in a hotly contested eight round bout that saw Ramirez when on all three judges cards with the scores of 79-73, 79-73, 77-74.
Super featherweight Andy Vences (14-0, 10 KOs) stole the show with a second round KO over Manuel Rojas (12-3, 4 KOs). Vences dropped Rojas in the first round with a right hand that Rojas was never able to recover from. In the second round, Vences found his grove time Rojas and laid him out flat as Rojas could not beat the count. The time of the stoppage was 1:40.
Middleweight Joe Louie Lopez (7-0, 4 KOs) stopped Dave Courchaine (2-7, 2 KOs) in round three. Lopez dominated Courchaine, a MMA fighter converted to a boxer, as floored him twice – the second forcing Courchaine to stay down.
Saul Lomas stopped previous unbeaten Eduardo Dominguez in less than two minutes as both men hurt each other, but Lomas landed a thunderous blow that floored Dominguez who beat the count, but was stopped seconds later.
Eric Altamirano of Fresno, CA (6-0 5KOs) stopped Ricardo Maldonado (5-4) by way of fourth round stoppage. Altamirano dropped Maldonado in the third then finished him with a flurry of the punches that Maldonado could not respond from.
Guy Robb (17-1 7KOs) of Sacramento, CA went to a hard fought eight round decision with Juan Ruiz (24-20 7KOs). The bout was mostly fought on the inside with Robb getting the better of the exchanges. The judges scored the bout 80-72 two times with one judge scoring the bout 79-73.
In the opening bout super lightweight Alex Rojas (2-0-1 2KOs) stopped Emilio Hernandez (2-3 2KOs) in what appeared to be a pre-mature stoppage in the second round, 0:36 into that round.
