Karim Mayfield Set To Fight Shawn Porter on PBC On Spike Tonight
In an exclusive interview with ITRBoxing.com senior writer Lukie Ketelle, Karim Mayfield explained that he took a fight on 24 hour notice against Shawn Porter for the Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV television debut. Porter’s original opponent, Roberto Garcia, failed a pre-fight medical exam and was ruled out of competition. It was rumored heavily that a fighter not many had heard of named Erick Bone would fill in, but Mayfield came in at the last minute to create a much more interesting match-up and compelling one on paper. Mayfield and Porter have both served as sparring partners in Manny Pacquiao training camps a while back as well as have trained together as recent as last year.
In essence this is what Mayfield’s career has been filled with, doing things the hard way as he is fighting his biggest foe to date on less than a day’s notice. Mayfield remarked “Be sure you included that…this is the only way I can get a fight like this.” The sad thing is that this is the truth, Mayfield who doesn’t always bring a fan friendly style to the ring at all times, is a high risk-low reward to most fighters and someone most fighters just don’t seem eager to fight especially with a full camp.
According to a report that came out with in the last hour from Ryan Maquinana of BoxingScene.com, whom was able to correspond with Mayfield’s trainer, Ben Bautista, Mayfield will have to weigh in at 8am Friday morning at no more than 149 lbs.
Nonetheless, Mayfield explained that Porter “…gotta go.” The fight will serve as the opening bout on the Premier Boxing Champions boxing telecast on March 13th (today) on Spike TV 9PM EST/6PM PST at Citizen’s Bank Arena in Ontario, CA
