Porter hands Broner his second loss
Shawn Porter decisioned a sloppy Adrien Broner earlier tonight to a 12th round fight for the “Battle of Ohio”. Broner, who looked very bad in the fight, constantly holding and having a point deducted late in the fight, suffers his second loss, the first at the hands of Marcos Maidana back in 2013.
Coming into the fight, Team Porter wanted to initiate a fast paced fight to discomfort Broner.
In the second round, Porter was able to hurt Broner but Broner’s clinching didn’t allow Porter to follow up with his punches as his bull rushed in.
Getting into the middle stages of the fight, Broner began to pick his shots from the outside, where he seemed a lot more effective. The fight began to flip-flop as Broner and Porter would trade rounds. Broner did a good job of keeping Porter on the outside, sometimes simply extending his arm and not allowing Porter to land punches.
As the fight progressed, Broner, one again began to excessively hold, and after multiple warnings from referee Tony Weeks, he was finally deducted a point late in the fight. By now, Porter had the fight in the bag, as he would discomfort Broner on the inside. Porter attacked the body and the head, hurting Broner on some occasions.
With having only clinched throughout most of the fight, it became apparent Porter was winning easy on points unless he got jobbed. Broner definitely needed a knockout to win and he surprised us all going into the final round.
Though he didn’t knock him out, Broner did land a solid left hook in the opening seconds of the 12th to put Porter down. Porter, who was clearly hurt, held his ground and held for the first half of the round until he recovered.
With the knockdown as motivation, Broner looked a lot better in the second half of the 12th round than he did in the entire fight as he was looking to seal the deal and steal the show by possibly stopping Porter.
In the end, Porter survived the round and walked away with a unanimous decision win. Giving Broner his second career loss.
