Joe Smith Jr. upsets Fonfara, Warren wins title
In an upset heard around the windy city of Chicago Joe Smith Jr. (21-1 18KOs) knocked out hometown favorite Andrzej Fonfara (28-4 16KOs) in the very first round of their light heavyweight bout on Saturday night at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. Fonfara appeared to be in control , but got into his bad habits of giving up distance with his lengthy frame after hurting Smith Jr. he went in for the kill only to catch a sneaky right hand that floored him. The fight was stopped when he dropped Fonfara for a second time.
Erickson Lubin (15-0 11KOs) continues to prove his claim to being the best prospect in boxing right now as he stopped Daniel Sandoval (38-4 35KOs) in the third round of a swing bout before the main event. Lubin wasted no time as he landed his trademark “jackhammer right” and “sledgehammer left” that sealed the deal. Lubin dedicated the bout to his hometown of Orlando, Florida.

In the opening bout of the telecast, Cincinnati’s Rau’shee Warren (22-1, 4 KOs) avenged his lone career loss to Juan Carlos Payano (17-1, 8 KOs) to win his first world title claiming the WBA super bantamweight world title by majority decision. The fight saw Warren win the early rounds, Payano come on in the middle rounds to even up the bout only for Warren to fight back strong late to seal the deal. The judges scored the bout a tad bit closer than I saw as two judges saw the bout 115-113 for Warren with one scoring a 114-114 draw.
