Keith Thurman reflects on first trainer, Ben Getty
24 hours before making weight for his clash with Shawn Porter on Saturday, June 25th at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York, Keith “One Time” Thurman was reflective prior to the biggest fight of his career. In an interview posted by boxing news kingpin, Elie Seckbach, which is linked below, Thurman reflected candidly about his first boxing coach, Ben Getty.
“[Getty] was on a thousand milligrams of morphine daily. Ben Getty was in pain each and every day of his life, I understood that it was his time to go and I am truly grateful for everything he taught me, I am grateful for meeting Dan Birmingham…and I am thankful for where God worked it so I didn’t have just one great coach, but two.”
It was the candid reflection that has made Thurman such a beloved fighter as not just is he a great in-ring talent, he often gets very open and express with his life as well. Thurman ended the interview saying that he feels he is “…one in a million” in terms of fighters as he has it all, a fun fighting style to watch, power and might just be one of the best fighters in the world.
