Andrew Cancio knocks out Aidar Sharibayev in upset win
Super featherweight Andrew Cancio was not given much of a shot by many heading into his co-main event bout on ESPN2 against highly decorated amateur Aidar Sharibayev at Fantasy Springs Casino and Resort in Indio, CA, but didn’t matter after his tenth round technical knockout win.
Sharibayev won the first two rounds with his boxing skills and lateral movement, but the third round saw a seismic shift as Cancio dropped Sharibayev at the end of the round. Cancio would drop Sharibayev again in the fifth round as well.
It was the story of a little versus a lot as Sharibayev had to use a lot of energy and flashy moves to land grazing punches as Cancio constantly came forward using little energy and throwing a lot especially a right uppercut followed by a left hook.
Cancio finished the fight in style stopping Sharibayev in the tenth and final round of the bout.
With the win, Andrew Cancio wins the WBO super featherweight intercontinental title.
Results from the undercard saw super featherweight Javier Padilla get a four-round decision over Ricardo Arias in an entertaining bout, Genaro Gamez was tested in an eight-round decision win over Shoki Sakai as well as Aaron McKenna gets a first-round KO over Keasen Freeman
