Joshua Greer Jr. barely beats Antonio Nieves, despite being dropped

“Mr. ESPN+” Joshua Greer Jr. might be looking down the barrel of a title shot after defeating former world title challenger Antonio Nieves in a ten-round WBO NABO & WBC Continental Americas Title bout, from the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nevada, despite an uninspired win that most thought Greer lost in the building as they booed Greer loudly when the verdict was announced.

In the first round, both felt each other out, as Greer looked for his trademark power punches while Nieves looked to land body shot and keep up constant pressure on Greer. The second saw Greer land a great body shot to Nieves, but Nieves continues to use effective pressure. In short, neither guy let the other excel in their elite trait.

The fight continued in such a manner in which Nieves would work his way into the inside. The fourth round saw Nieves land the best shot of the fight knocking Greer backward. Greer would have a very big round seventh round landing his best punches of the fight as a heated exchange between the two happened in the middle in which Nieves mocked Greer’s dancing in between rounds, which Greer was vocally not a fan of.

The second half the fight saw Greer pick up the pace as well as up the body shot output which he was working throwing tremendous volume and power from a high guard position. Nieves, who was the aggressor earlier now was on his back foot and defensive as Greer began to take over from the seventh round onward until the tenth round. In the tenth and final round, Greer was dropped by a costly overhand right

The judges saw the bout 95-94, 95-94 and 96-93, which would appear they scored the knockdown against Nieves, who actually scored the knockdown.

To a chorus of boos, Greer said after the fight the following.

“I am going home a winner, and [Nieves] is going home a loser.”

The statement was largely unpopular amongst the working class Reno fans, who didn’t take kindly to the rhetoric.

Naoya Inoue might be the world champion that Greer will get his chance against.
