Jones, Medina, Graham and Torrez Jr., win Gold At Boxam
After a week of international competition, the USA Boxing team will head to France, the second leg of their international competition with some trophies from the 2020 Boxam in CASTELLÓN, Spain.
The women certainly did their part as 57 kg Andrea Medina won her gold medal bout via walkover, after an impressive tournament that saw her win bouts prior to using both boxing skills and the ability to dog out an opponent. Medina is an emerging star of the 2021 Olympic team.
In terms of sheer dominance, 69 kg Oshae Jones won a gold medal over Emilie Sonvico of France. Jones, who won gold at the Pan-Am Games, is steadily looking like the front-runner for the 2021 Olympic Games and put forth another quality effort looking extremely dominant in international competition.
The highly underrated 75 kg Naomi Graham defeated Patricia Cabrera to win a gold medal as well. Naomi Graham, who has a lot of experience has gone relatively under-the-radar for most of the amateur events leading up to this tournament but is another fighter who has a very good chance at winning gold at the Olympics.
Tulare, Ca’s Richard Torrez Jr. won a gold medal via abandonment as his opponent Ghadfa Drissi suffered an injury, and was unable to continue.
Brisbane, Ca’s Charlie Sheehy, lost a very controversial decision to Adrian Thiam of Spain. Sheehy had rocked Thiam multiple times in the fight.
Other notable medals from the tournament were, 52 kg Abraham Perez who won bronze, 81 kg Rahim Gonzales who won a bronze medal, 91 kg Darius Fulghum, 60 kg Rashida Ellis won a bronze as well.
Outside of Torrez Jr., in the men’s division, Spain won gold in every division.
