Moreno, Goade and Watson win big. McCumby gets first title shot and more AZ Boxing news!
Welcome to the first edition of AZ Boxing News! Eventually, I might give this weekly article a snazzy name with a graphic, but for now, let’s keep it simple.
Last Saturday, August 3rd, in Sonora, MX, Jordan “El Moreno” Martinez added another victory to his undefeated record. He’s now 9-0, 8 KOs. His stablemate, Damarrius Watson, quickly took down his opponent, picking up a first-round TKO and advancing his record to 4-0, 2 KOs. Also in action last Saturday was one of the most exciting fighters in the state, our hidden gem Conner Goade (4-2-1, 3 KOs). “Kid Canelo” scored a second-round TKO, dominating his opponent from the opening bell. All three fighters will be in action on August 24th in Phoenix, AZ, at the Celebrity Theatre for Iron Boy Promotions, Iron Boy 73. You can buy tickets at the venue, but please support your local talent by purchasing tickets directly from the fighters. Contact them via social media at @kidcanelo or @dmowatson. Also on the card is another rising prospect, Joseph Rivas (8-1-1, 3 KOs).
In other exciting news, undefeated Trevor McCumby will face Caleb Plant for the vacant WBA Super Middleweight Championship. Originally from Illinois and now fighting out of Glendale, Arizona, McCumby (28-0, 21 KOs) has climbed the rankings since returning rejuvenated in 2023. The 31-year-old turned pro in 2010 after a stellar amateur career with a 138-11 record and numerous national titles. After initially fighting at light heavyweight, McCumby returned in May 2023 as a super middleweight and scored knockouts of Vicente Martin Rodriguez and Rodolfo Ezequiel Martinez in back-to-back contests. Most recently, he decisively defeated longtime contender Christopher Pearson in January 2024, earning a wide unanimous decision.
“Sports mirror life, and I see Caleb Plant as a symbol of those who keep many down. It’s my job to fight back,” McCumby said. “No matter what resources are used against me, I won’t be kept down. I’m inspired by everyone who fights back, and that’s the mentality I’m bringing into this matchup on September 14.”
Two weeks ago, on July 27th, Del Sol Promotions put on another fun card at the American Royal Palace in Phoenix, AZ. Making her pro debut, Alezet Valerio picked up a majority decision victory in an action-packed fight that had the entire crowd on their feet. Suavecito Adrian Rodriguez moved to 9-0 with 5 KOs with a majority decision victory in the main event, closing out the night with another action packed, back and forth brawl.
Sergio Hernandez secured his second pro victory, moving to 2-0, 1 KO in the heavyweight division. Sergio mentioned this would be his last fight at heavyweight, as he plans to move down to 175 for his next bout. He’s been working extremely hard at the Ramos Boxing Academy and has already garnered a nice following, with a big chunk of the crowd supporting him.
Also on the card, Joseph Cruz Brown (7-9, 3 KOs), Xavier Esquivel (2-0, 1 KO), Trevor Kotara (4-3-1, 1 KO) and Phillip Vella 1-0 all celebrated victories at the end of the night. We’re all looking forward to what Del Sol Promotions has in store for us next.
That’s all for this week’s AZ Boxing News. Stay tuned for weekly articles with fight results and announcements!
