Pacquiao returns

Manny Pacquiao all, but shut the doors on the career of Lucas Matthysse as the future hall of famer battered Matthysse into submission by way of a 7th round TKO. Pacquiao who had put together his worst performance in recent memory in his last fight, a loss to Jeff Horn, looked as good as ever at 39-years-old.

On the other hand, Matthysse looked about as bad as he has looked as a professional as despite having a name, Matthysse no longer looks like a fighter who can compete at the top of the division and might have competed in his last professional fight.

Pacquiao will now instantly jump into the conversation with sexy names both the welterweight and lightweight division as names like Terence Crawford, Vasyl Lomachenko and even Keith Thurman seem feasible, whereas realistically someone like Mike Alvarado, who was rumored to fight him earlier this year, might end up with the bout. With the most realistic fight that seems all, but destined to happen to be Amir Khan in the fall.

Pacquiao recorded his first knockout in nine years and though we hate to do this, we have to bring up the fact that the fight was held in Malaysia with very lax drug testing protocols, which though we are not saying Pacquiao did anything of ill-intent, but the performance at his heightened age along with a country with very liberal drug testing policies should be noted as well.

Nonetheless, Pacquiao now finds himself in the position to fight for big money and as a fighter with ongoing money issues, this is a positive for him.

Regis Prograis

Regis Prograis might be the strongest counter-puncher in boxing as his confusing angles from his southpaw stance with great timing of his opponents punches offer trouble to most opponents he faces. When Prograis gets comfortable though, he has a tendency to get wild looking for the kill. Prograis’ bout on ESPN was a good developmental bout as he got rounds and experience which is vital to a young prospect.

Prograis will now enter the World Boxing Super Series in which he is the favorite win it at the super lightweight division.

Teofimo Lopez, the star

Lightweight Teofimo Lopez seems destined for greatness as he dropped William Silva three times before stopping him in the sixth round of their scheduled ten-round fight. ITRBoxing earlier this year did a documentary on the young fighter which you can watch above.

Lopez looked to be on another level as he faced little resistance in the first step-up fight of his career. It appears his next opponent will be Antonio Lozada Jr., the man who beat Felix Verdejo earlier this year.

De Leon, Rivera

Erick De Leon had mixed results in his performance on Saturday as he was dropped in the first round and suffered what some pundit stated was a shoulder injury during the fight. The result saw a tough hard fought bout in which he got hit a bit and seemed to tire at the end. De Leon, a stellar fighter had a rough go in this undercard fight.

Featherweight Jean Carlos Rivera picked up a first-round KO on the undercard as well.

Joet Gonzalez in a tough bout

Featherweight Joet Gonzalez picked up a split decision win over Rafael Rivera in Los Angeles, CA to obtain NABO WBO featherweight title. The bout was ugly. Gonzalez never seemed to settle in and towards the end of the fight, Gonzalez’s punch output was very low.

It was a developmental fight and a tough bout for Gonzalez, a highly touted prospect who moves forward with from this fight with a win, but still has a lot to work on.

Seinesa “Super Bad” Estrada picked technical knockout on television. Estrada is a special talent fighting at her walk around weight using speed and angles to offset her opponents’ aggression.

Also on the undercard, Maricela Cornejo picked up a knockout win and Richard Acevedo stopped his opponent as well. A good outing for Golden Boy on television.

Rocky Fielding wins a world title

Rocky Fielding seemed destined to be a commonwealth fighter that was until he defeated Tyrone Zeuge to become the WBA super middleweight champion.

Karim Mayfield’s Hard Hitta Promotions returned for their third event in San Francisco at the illustrious Fairmont Hotel as the promotions brightest young prospect super lightweight Willie “The Thrill” Shaw Jr. (7-0 6KOs) picked up a fourth-round TKO over Giovannie Gonzalez (3-2 3KOs).

Shaw and Gonzalez fought a competitive affair in which both had their moments, but the size of Shaw, a naturally bigger man seemed to be getting the better of the action throughout with his sharp punches and bigger frame. This was Gonzalez’s first time fighting above 130 lbs. as he moved up two weight classes to face Shaw.

The stoppage came in the middle of the fourth and final round as Shaw started digging to Gonzalez’s body, who didn’t like it and took a knee. Once down, the referee waved the bout off.

Shaw is a tremendous Bay Area prospect who would be best served to face a veteran like Jarett Jeter in a six-round bout as a step-up in competition.

San Francisco, CA’s own Raquel Miller (7-0 3KOs) picked up a six-round decision over Tiffany Woodard (4-11-3 3KOs) in a developmental fight. Miller looked good in the bout as she focused on her boxing technique and picked up good experience as she approaches a world-title fight in her upcoming bouts.

In a tremendous performance, middleweight Ricardo Pinell (17-3-1 10KOs) picked up a fifth-round TKO over Lucius Johnson (4-4-1 3KOs) in a very competitive evenly matched fight. Johnson who was far better than his record would indicate stayed game in the fight until a left hand from the southpaw Pinell had Johnson looking to survive, which he couldn’t.

Cruiserweight Andres Salas (3-0 3KOs) continued his streak of first-round KOs as he stopped undefeated Davin Clark (1-1) in an action-packed bout. The pure pressure of Salas appeared to wear on Clark, who looked a little unsettled after the first mintue by the pace of Salas. The stoppage came at the end of the round when Salas dropped Clark in the corner.

The opening bout saw Sacramento, CA’s Erick Sanchez (1-0) pick up a four-round decision over Bounthong TongSyvanthong (0-1).
