Lamont Peterson Stripped of IBF Junior Welterweight Title
The close decision loss to Danny Garcia last Saturday on NBC in Brooklyn, NY will have much more last implication as it was announced yesterday that Peterson was stripped of his IBF junior welterweight title following the loss per reports from ESPN.com. The decision which comes as a surprise to little left a bad taste in some people’s mouth since Peterson won the fight on a majority of media scorecards as well as mine. That being said, Peterson did just enough to allow himself to be in a close fight and that ended up costing his belt as well as a victory.
On the other side of the coin, Peterson struggled to make weight having to get fully naked to make the 143 lbs catchweight and entering the ring slightly above the middleweight range. The IBF has mandated that Cesar Rene Cuenca (47-0, 2 KOs) to fight South Korea’s Ik Yang (19-0, 14 KOs) for their now-vacant title, two fighters that I believe 98% of boxing fans are unaware of at all.
