For Santa Cruz, a once beloved fighter in the Southern California area this will be his chance at regaining fans he has seemingly lost over the past year as he has taken on lower level opposition for top dollar that seemingly has made him off putting to Mexican-American fans. Mares, who has not quite looked the same since Jhonny Gonzalez knocked him out in the first round of their fight a few years ago, has also had a contentious time with the fans, but always found some sense of endearment as it at least appeared Mares always wanted the toughest bouts.
