Golden Boy Results: Quintero upsets Fontanez
Lightweight Marvin “Cachorro” Quintero (28-6, 24 KOs) scored an upset fifth round KO over Jeffery Fontanez (16-3, 12 KOs) on Friday night at the Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles. The knock truly proved troublesome for Golden Boy Promotions, the promoter, as Fontanez looked to be a fighter that they had potential to bring up over the next few years after a few career setbacks.
The fight was weird and paced oddly. Both fighters looked tentative and unwilling to commit to anything of merit in the early going. Business picked up in the fourth round when both fighters landed hard shots hurting the other. This set the stage for a fifth round that saw the vet, Quintero, throw a wide straight left that floored Fontanez. Fontanez would get up , but get sent down to the floor again, the bout was stopped right after as towel came flying in. Quintero is now the NABF lightweight champion.
In the co-feature, super featherweight Carlos Morales (12-1-3, 5 KOs) hurt O’Nell Negron (10-2-2, 8 KOs) for seven rounds in a developmental fight between two fighters of different skill levels. The ringside physician, stopped the fight in between rounds.
Uneaten super bantamweight Oscar “Colombia” Negrete (12-0, 4 KOs) scored a sixth round TKO over Jose Estrella (14-8-1, 10 KOs). Similar to the co-main event Negrete was just on another level and beatdown an outgunned fighter who refused to answer he bell.
