Avila , Rivera win atop Cache Creek Card

Manuel “Tino” Avila (19-0 8KOs) defeated rugged veteran Angel Beranza (36-34-2 28KOs) at Cache Creek Casino & Resort in Brooks, CA in the main event by unanimous decision on October 24th. The fight was Avila’s first with Garcia boxing family with Max Garcia working as head trainer, Sam Garcia as the 2nd assist and Dean Familton as strategist, as well as his first bout since winning the NABF super bantamweight title.

Avila, who had to use his skill set to offset the veteran who appeared to try to use dirty tactics to offset Avila’s superior skill. Avila was hit once when he slipped and took a knee as well as multiple times had his arm contorted in many directions. In the end, the bout went eight rounds instead of ten, though sadly this reporter didn’t find the reason for that. Avila won via unanimous decision.

In the co-main event, featherweight Rafael Rivera (20-0-2 14KOs) upset Ruben Garcia (14-1-1 5KOs) who was hoping to find a home for himself in U.S. based promotion. From the onset of the bout Rivera and Garcia went toe-to-toe, but Rivera seemed the stronger of the two and more apt to be able to land hard, counter punches that greatly impacted the fight. Rivera won by a decision of 78-74 on all three judges cards.

Alberto Torres (6-0-2 3KOs) made short work of Luis Silva (2-7 1KO) in a catchweight fight that was fought at lightweight, nine pounds above his normal weight class of featherweight, the weight class Torres traditionally fights at. Torres stopped Silva in fourth round with vicious body work that made the ref call a stop to the action. Torres had hurt Silva the round prior, but was unable to finish him late in that round, but finished the deed in the following round.

Heavyweight Xavier Vigney (3-0 2KOs) made short work of Derrick Williams (0-4) needing just 58 seconds to knockout his foe, while dropping him two times for good measure. The first knockdown came from a uppercut Williams walked into as he Vigney sat on the ropes, the second was a left hook that kept Williams on the mat. Vigney is currently a Glory Kickboxing signed fighter who fights regularly on Spike TV.

Ryan Bourland (8-1 3KOs) got back to his winning ways earning a technical knockout win over Cesar Ruiz (2-2 1KO) as Ruiz was unable to answer the bell for the fourth and final round. Bourland landed hard left hooks to the body with a well versed head and body attack that caused Ruiz to break down over the course of the fight.

In the opening bout, junior lightweight Pedro Moreno (1-0 1KO) made a one heck of a debut needing just over a minute to stop Percy Peterson (1-10-1), who hit the canvas quickly and was stopped not much long after that.
