Hurd upsets Galarza, Stiverne wins off-television
In a clash of unbeaten junior middleweights, Jarrett Hurd (17-0, 11 KOs) scored a sixth round TKO over Frank “Notorious” Galarza (17-1-2, 11 KOs) which was a major upset since Hurd was largely unknown. Hurd dropped Galarza in round four, as he spent the majority of two rounds dominating Galarza until the stoppage happened.
Sergiy “The Technician” Derevyanchenko (7-0, 5 KOs) scored a dominating third round TKO over Jessie Nicklow (25-8-3, 8 KOs) in a super middleweight bout. Derevyanchenko outclassed Nicklow, who didn’t stand much of a chance, the bout served as a showcase for Derevyanchenko.
Unbeaten light heavyweight David “El Bandera Roja” Benavidez (11-0, 10 KOs) knocked out Felipe Romero (15-10-1, 9 KOs) in the first round by dropping Romero three times in the opening round.
In a bout not broadcast on Showtime, Former WBC heavyweight world champion Bermane “B WARE” Stiverne (25-2-1, 21 KOs) recovered from a first round knockdown to hammer out a sleepy ten round unanimous decision over Derric Rossy (30-11, 14 KOs) on Saturday night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. This was a tough break for Stiverene who was last in action against Deontay Wilder and found himself in a tough bout that was not broadcast as Showtime choose to televise young prospects over him. The final scores were 96-93, 96-93 and 95-94.
This card was rebuilt last week, when Gary Russell Jr. pulled out of his WBC title defense and the card was demoted from a “Showtime Championship Boxing” card to a “ShoBox: Special Feature”.
