Canelo dominates Cotto to win WBC middleweight title
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1 32KOs) earned a hard fought decision over Miguel Cotto (40-5 33KOs) in the main event of their scheduled bout at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, NV.
In the first round was tense as both men were on pins and needles with neither really fully getting off. It was the kind of round you would expect to begin a bout when pride and a lot of money is one the line. The second round saw Cotto simply out throwing Canelo who struggled to land cleanly as Cotto’s time was the key for the round. The third saw Canelo return the favor as he dominated the majority of the round getting an edge in the fight.
The fourth saw another fairly even round one that summarized the fight as a whole as Miguel Cotto used his jab to be busier while Canelo sat down on punches to land the harder shots. The middle rounds saw the bigger Canelo Alvarez landing the harder punches once again seemingly starting to wear down Cotto. As the fight got into the later rounds, it appeared Alvarez was just too big for Cotto.
In the end, Canelo Alvarez got the nod over Miguel Cotto with the scores of117-111, 119-109, 118-110
Canelo Alvarez is now the WBC middleweight champion and now has to fight Gennady Golovkin, who is the number one contender for that title.
