Vargas win WBC title over Miura in FOTY battle
In what surely has to be the front runner for “fight of the year” super featherweight Francisco Vargas (23-0-1, 17 KOs) knocked out Takashi Miura (29-3-2, 22 KOs) with a ninth round TKO on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino Events Center in Las Vegas to win the WBC super featherweight title. Vargas nearly stopped Miura in the opening minute of the first round with a fantastic surge. Miura would then come back to drop Vargas in the fourth round and badly hurt Vargas in the eighth round. With a bad cut on Vargas’ eye, Vargas decided to go out on his shield or try and win the fight and the rest will be fight game history as he dropped Miura in the ninth round.
Referee Tony Weeks stepped in while Miura appeared to still be fighting, but badly hurt. The call was debatable, but if a rematch were to happen no one would complain. The bout has to be easily considered a modern day classic as Vargas earned his first world title.
