Browne defeats Chagaev to win WBA heavyweight championship
Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne (24-0, 21 KOs) not just pulled off an upset beating heavily favored, but also got off the canvas to earn his 10th round knockout victory on Saturday night at the Colosseum Sport Hall in Grozny, Chechnya, Russia.
The fight started slow at first as Browne appeared to get the better using his jab to keep Chagaev away. Chagaev began using feints and setting traps that allowed for him to close distance that in the sixth round saw Browne hit the deck. Bleeding badly, Browne made it to the end of the round, barely. In the tenth round, Browne floored Chagaev with a massive right hand that Chagaev was able to get up from, but could not recover from.
With the victory Browne becomes the first ever Australian heavyweight champion to win a world title as he now holds the WBA heavyweight title.
