Rene Alvarado upsets Jayson Velez in Indio, Ca
Super featherweight Rene Alvarado (24-7, 16 KOs) pulled off an upset that may have saved his career with a split decision win Friday night over Jayson Velez (23-3-1, 16 KOs) at the Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino Events Center in Indio, California. Velez used his reach until Alvarado’s pressure was too much and fought from a distance that made no sense for Velez to be at. The fight was very close, but the judges favored the aggression of Alvarado who pushed the pace.
The judges saw it 96-94, 96-94, 97-93 for Rene Alvarado.
In the co-main event welterweight prospect Rashidi “Speedy” Ellis (16-0) got off the deck to beat Luis Hernandez (12-2, 7 KOs). Ellis outboxed Hernandez despite being floored with a leaping left hook that sent him to the canvas.All three judges scored the bout 78-73 in Ellis’ favor.
Super bantamweight Cesar Diaz (1-0 1KO) stopped Isau Duenez (1-6) in the third round. Super bantamweight Azat Hovhannisyan (9-2, 8 KOs) stopped Sacramento, Ca’s Mario Ayala (4-3-1, 1 KO) in fifth round.Lightweight Marco Magdaleno (4-0, 2 KOs) picked up an unanimous decision over Hugo Padilla (3-7, 2 KOs). The opening bout saw Jhon Leon (1-0 1KO) get a first round KO over Jose Luis Huerta (0-1-1).
