Luis Torres Drops Misael Cabrera En Route To Win In Sonora, Mexico

Juan Manuel Márquez and ProBox TV continued with their monthly show in Mexico, heading to Sonora for the first time. The evening hosted predominantly local fighters in an exciting night of midweek boxing.

Luis ‘Koreano’ Torres put his undefeated record on the line against local rival Misael ‘Pichon’ Cabrera for the WBC Latino Lightweight title. What was billed to be a firecracker by many pundits, did not disappoint.

The crowd came to their feet as Luis Torres sent Misael Cabrera to the canvas late in the second. Cabrera survived the round and regrouped in the third. Torres allowed Cabrera to come back into the fight in the mid-rounds, with Torres not being able to capitalize on his 10-8 round in the second.

You could argue Cabrera took many of the rounds between the third and the eighth, growing in confidence as the knockdown grew more distance. However, Torres ended the fight strongly in the last two rounds after an enthralling main event in Sonora.

The judges scored the fight: 98-91, 96-93, and 96-93 all in favor of Luis Torres for him to become the WBC Latino champion.

Commentary team Chris Algieri and Paulie Malignaggi scored the contest much closer. Malignaggi scored the fight one point in favour of Torres and Algieri scored it a draw.

19 year old super featherweight Oscar Alvarez remained undefeated in a close fight with Diego Lopez Juarez and Mario Valenzuela defeated the unbeaten Alex Fuentes over six rounds on the undercard.
