Canelo knocks out Liam Smith to win WBO junior middleweight title
Boxing superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1 33KOs) won the WBO junior middleweight title by knocking out Liam Smith (24-1-1 13KOs) in the ninth round of the main event of a rather underwhelming HBO pay-per-view that took place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Alvarez dominated the first round taking the center of the ring and landing fast, quick combinations that would go unanswered.
The second round saw Smith try to mount some offense, but not much was there. Canelo continued to land clean as I began to wonder not if Smith would fall, but when would he.
Smith would stand his ground and throw punches showing he was tough farmland dirt and stubborn enough to eat a punch like a buffet, in bunches.
The fifth saw Smith’s best round as he rocked Canelo at the end of the round. The seventh saw Smith hit the deck from a Canelo uppercut, the one that had been landing all night.
In the ninth round, Canleo landed a concussive punch that floored Liam Smith for the count.
