Jerwin Ancajas makes history by defeating Jonas Sultan

IBF super flyweight champion Jerwin “Pretty Boy” Ancajas made his fifth defense of his title against fellow Filipino super flyweight Jonas Sultan to make his fifth title defense at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, CA, on a bout televised by ESPN+.

The first round was incredibly tactical as Ancajas won the round with a solid investment to the body, but nothing seemingly wowed the audience as the pressure and high stakes nature of the bout seemed to weigh heavy on both fighters.

The rounds were very technical and did not appeal to the fanbase in Fresno, CA, who are used to a more action-packed style of fighting, from the hometown hero Jose Ramirez. The bout was solid, but one that only a practitioner or a trained eye could understand as alcohol and lulls in the action seemed to frustrate the crowd even further.

The bout ended well with the most exciting round the twelve in which the most punches were thrown and landed.

The judges saw the bout 119-109, 119-109, 117-111 for Ancajas.

The bout was the first time in 93 years in which two Filipino fighters fought for a world title.
