Kal Yafai stops David Carmona in seven rounds

2008 British Olympian and WBA super flyweight champion Kal Yafai (24-0 14KOs) made a successful professional debut in the United States as he defeated David Carmona (21-6-5 9KOs) in a 12-round bout despite it not being for Yafai’s WBA super flyweight title as David Carmona missed weight by nearly 4 pounds for this co-main event at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, CA.

In the first round, Yafai dropped Carmona and then continued to land the cleaner and more effective punches in the following rounds. In what traditional boxing fans enjoy, the two had rounds in which they exchanged punches giving up distance at times and simply exchanging. Yafai would drop Carmona again as Yafai controlled the action, but comfortable fighting on the side probably based off successful bodywork.

Carmona was dropped again in the fifth round, but Yafai was deducted a point for a low blow in the same round to add to the bizarre tone of the bout.

The bout came to a halt at the end of the seventh round when David Carmona refused to answer the bell.
