“Chocolatito” Gonzalez off ill-fated final HBO card on December 8th

Former four-division world champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez has withdrawn from his Dec. 8 co-main event at StubHub Center after he injured a knee during training camp in Indio, Ca, for his fight against former WBC light flyweight world champion, Pedro Guevara.

360 Promotions’ Tom Loeffler is currently looking at Juan Francisco Estrada to step in as Gonzalez’s replacement, as Estrada recently fought earlier this year on Super-Fly 3 at The Forum in Inglewood, Ca.

HBO’s final broadcast for the near future seems very ill-fated as the card will now feature unified women’s welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus taking on lesser-known Aleksandra Lopes as well Claressa Shields on quick turn around of roughly a month fighting Femke Hermans for the Shields’ WBC and WBA women’s middleweight titles.

Though good bouts women’s boxing is still in its infancy and isn’t quite the draw one might hope, with a card competing against Golden Boy in Indio, Ca and pound-for-pound superstar Vasyl Lomachenko on the same night, the card is looking for something to bid the network farewell. Though it is bittersweet seeing women’s boxing broadcast on the final, in this incarnation of HBO, HBO show as the network avoided women’s boxing, even almost not televising Heather “The Heat” Hardy’s bout earlier this.

As for Gonzalez, it seems that years of awkward strength and conditioning has caught up with him. Gonzalez is one of the best fighters in the world, even now, but some of the workouts he put on Instagram raised red flags, please see below.

The news is sad as well since this marks seemingly the end of Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez’s career at the top of the sport as it appears his body is struggling to get through training camps.
