Former champ Chris Algieri wins comeback fight in New York

Former WBO junior welterweight world champion Chris Algieri (22-3, 8 KOs) returned to the ring after a two and half year layoff at the place it all began for him the Paramount Theatre in Huntington, New York.

Algieri, who has focused more so on nutrition, most notably joining Daniel Jacobs camp before Jacobs fought Gennady Golovkin on pay-per-view. Algieri now is working with Andre Rozier, Jacobs’ longtime coach.

Algieri faced Angel Hernandez in a catchweight bout of 144 lbs. as he won a wide unanimous decision with the scores being 99-91, 100-90 and 100-90.

Algieri now is in the running for a big fight as after Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker beat Alex Saucedo to retain his WBO junior welterweight world title, Hooker’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, brought up Algieri’s name amongst two other opponents who might be in the running for a fight in Texas with Hooker.
