2022 Men’s Amateur Boxer of the Year: Rahim Gonzales
Rahim Gonzales
2021 Winner: Jahmal Harvey
A fairly obvious pick as he went undefeated this year winning international gold medals as well. Gonzales and Jahmal Harvey feel like the best offerings that USA Boxing has at the world level, and Gonzales work ethic is second-to-none.
Gonzales is a student of the game, a high-IQ boxer, who won the Olympic Trials in 2019 without getting hit seemingly. He adapted to an international style, and now is able to fight on the inside and bang people out. Gonzales is as well-rounded a fighter as we have on Team USA and should be a captain, or at the very least a co-captain for the 2024 Olympic Games.
Gonzales had an incredible year that really was one of his crowning achievements on a fantastic amateur career.
Honorable Mention:
Jamar Talley – Talley recorded the best amateur knockout I saw all year in an amateur competition. Talley is a big puncher with a lot of promise.
Roscoe Hill – One hell of a boxer. Hill will be a very good professional, and he really established himself as one of the marquee American fighters heading into 2023 as his international experience should that he is a truly elite fighter.
Jahmal Harvey – Something special. One of the best amateurs we have seen in U.S. Boxing in some time, Harvey keeps getting better and better.
Julius Ballo – Holds a win over Jahmal Harvey and contineus to win at nationals over and over again. One of the better 125 lbs fighters in the country.
Omari Jones – A talented fighter, who is capable of going deep in international tournaments. One of the best talents we have in the USA Boxing system.
Troy Nash Jr. –Highly dominant. Nash Jr., is outclassing opponents in his division and creating separation that is impressive for his age range.
