Canelo Alvarez beats Gennady Golovkin in thrilling PPV main event
In a rematch, a year in the making middleweight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez picked up a hotly debated majority decision beating the boogeyman of the division Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in the main event of their HBO Boxing pay-per-view bout from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The first round saw an active jab from Golovkin keep Canelo out of range to land anything meaningful. The second saw Canelo Alvarez change the pace of the fight by landing a telling short left hook to head of Golovkin as well as landing good clean body shots. The third round saw the two trading punches in close quarters with both having moments.
The fourth saw business pick up as Golovkin and Canelo really began to throw bombs with wide hooks targeted at the body and the noggin. The fifth round started an unsettling trend of Golovkin breathing out of his mouth and fighting off his back foot trying to box, Canelo was also cut over his left eye in that round as well.
The sixth round saw Canelo put together one of his strongest rounds of the bout as ITRBoxing.com had the bout dead even at the midway point.
By the seventh round, it was clear, Canelo Alvarez was not going to let Golovkin move forward in the bout and it was taking a toll on the aging middleweight, Golovkin. Golovkin might have stolen the seventh round late with a quick flurry despite being pushed back the entire round. The eighth saw Golovkin get hit more cleanly then he had been prior while being less offensive.
The ninth round featured some of the best moments from Gennady Golovkin as Canelo Alvarez looked very fatigued. Alvarez’s corner showed extreme urgency in between rounds to calm the fighter as it appeared they noticed he was tired as well. Golovkin parlayed that into an excellent tenth round in which he landed a magnificent flurry that appeared to buzz Canelo as it was one of the more spectacular moments of the fight despite Alvarez staying on his feet.
The eleventh saw an exhausted Alvarez struggling to engage, but pushing forward nonetheless, but Golovkin would only land flurries in spurts causing the round to be tough to judge.
The in the final round Golovkin landed a telling right uppercut that was a telling punch as Canelo Alvarez pressed forward recklessly, walking into shots at times.
The judges saw the bout 114-114, 115-113 and 115-113 for Canelo Alvarez.
ITRBoxing.com scored the bout 115-113 for Gennady Golovkin.
