Garcia TKOs Malignaggi in ESPN Main Event
In the main event of Premier Boxing Champions second installment on ESPN taking place at The Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, welterweight Danny Garcia (31-0 18KOs) stopped Paulie Malignaggi (33-7 7KOs) in the ninth round.
In the early goings, Danny Garcia the much bigger man in the ring was able to walk down Malignaggi who was more active , but unable to land the harder punches. As the fight matured though, Garcia seemed to slow and wanted to stay stationary and just trade which Malignaggi didn’t oblige too. The most bizarre aspect of the fight was the fact that it took Garcia until the eighth round to start to go the body, something most would of thought would of happened sooner since Malignaggi’s game plan was to move. The moving ended in the ninth round as the onslaught of Garcia’s punches were too much for Malignaggi who was stopped upright although not hurt the accumulation of punches had worn on him.
Afterwards Danny Garcia raised Malignaggi’s hand as they walked around the ring in Malignaggi’s hometown of Brooklyn, New York. The bout was Garcia’s first at welterweight though he didn’t show much of a change from himself from 140 lbs. for better or for worse. Paulie Malignaggi was unavailable for comment after the fight though the question of retirement looms large as this is his second straight knockout loss.
