When the die hard fight fans, journalists, and experts heard about a fight  between Junior lightweight world titleholder Francisco Vargas, and former titleholder Orlando Salido, we couldn’t contain our excitement. The highly anticipated war may be over before it begins because, Vargas  has tested positive for the banned steroid clenbuterol, which puts his title and first defense in jeopardy.

The fight is set to take place on June 4th, on a televised HBO championship card from the StubHub in Carson, California.

The ironic part to all of this, is Vargas requested a Las Vegas based Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) to handle the testing for this upcoming bout. Vargas however failed a test last week, when results came back positive for clenbuterol, a steroid that boosts metabolism and burns fat, in his “A” sample.

Here’s the statement Golden Boy Promotions released in regards to their fighter:

“As part of a voluntary testing program that Francisco Vargas requested ahead of his June 4 fight, he tested positive for clenbuterol,” the statement said. “Francisco believes he tested positive due to ingesting contaminated meat in Mexico, where clenbuterol is commonly used by ranchers in livestock feed.

“Francisco has, is and will always be a clean fighter. That is why he insisted on this voluntary testing program ahead of the first defense of his WBC championship. He previously tested clean as part of this same voluntary testing regiment and in all of his previous fights.”.

The fight will most likely still continue despite this failed voluntary test, but once he’s licensed in California if he fails the California commission’s testing, it could be off.
