Margarito beats Canelo’s brother, is Canelo next?
Former world champion Antonio “Tijuana Tornado” Margarito (40-8, 27 KOs) scored a ten round split decision decision over Ramon “Inocente” Alvarez (23-5-2, 15 KOs) to claim the WBO Continental super welterweight title on Saturday night at the Baja California Center in Playas de Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico.
The fight was as weird as you would think as a nearly legally blind Margarito fought Alvarez in his typical style walking forward and absorbing further damage. In the eighth round, he floored Alvarez and created separation for a somewhat entertaining fight, that will be marred by the fact that the fighter’s health was not taken into consideration.
The judges saw the bout 97-92,97-92 for Margarito and one judge had it 95-94 for Alvarez.
To make things worse, Canelo Alvarez was ringside for the bout and is fighting Liam Smith in Texas next month for the WBO junior middleweight world title. The sad fact is with this win, Margarito could potentially fight Canelo Alvarez in the future and that isn’t right.
