Ashley Theohpane Wins Unpopular Split Decision on ESPN Opener
Ashley Theophane, best know as the man who some believe beat Danny Garcia early in his career, earned a lucky split decision in Las Vegas, NV against Mahonri Montes on the opener of ESPN2 Friday Night Fights special edition on Thursday. Theophane started well easily winning the first two or three rounds by outboxing Montes, the pressure fighter who seemed to struggle cutting the ring off. In the fourth round things began to change as Theophane appeared to be moving so much that he was getting winded and tired which allowed Montes his chance to shine.
Montes didn’t make it look pretty, but began to make it a wild fight as he forced himself into the pocket engaging the vet. In what seemed to be a very close fight that Theophane was barely up in, Theophane began to punch with the puncher in the final frame. The results saw a crisp straight right hand from Montes drop Theophane in the final second of the fight, who beat the count , but looked unsteady.
In typical split decision fashion it took too long for the results to be read with the house fighter, Theophane, winning via split decision. The final scores were 96-93, 93-96, 96-93.
