Ceja gets off canvas to beat Ruiz in PBC opener

Julio Cesar Ceja (30-1 27KOs) earned the biggest win of his career in heart of Los Angeles, CA as he defeated Hugo Ruiz (35-3 31KOs) after trading a pair of knockdowns to start off the evening for Premier Boxing Champions at The Staples Center to start the broadcast of Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN.

The bout began closely as you could tell the magnitude of the interim WBC super bantamweight title being on the line both fighters looked tentative. This all changed in the third when Ruiz caught Ceja coming in with a check hook that floored Ceja, who began to reach with his punches, possibly out of frustration for being on the outside for the first two rounds seeing as if pressure might undo Ruiz’s effective movement. In the following round, Ceja recovered to land some of his own shots to the gut of Ruiz, who was not fond of those lunging left hooks to the body that appeared to drop Ruiz’s hand.

In the fifth round, Ceja won over the hearts of many fans who had never heard of him before as he dropped Ruiz with a left hook as the two exchanged the punch. The punch was fight altering as Ruiz was unable to recover and was stopped shortly there after.

With the win Ceja is now the interim WBC super bantamweight champion.
