De La Hoya wins in LA Fight Club main event
Unbeaten featherweight Diego De La Hoya (12-0, 7 KOs) earned a dominant victory with an unanimous decision over former world title challenger Jesus “Estrella” Ruiz (32-7-5, 21 KOs) on Friday night at the Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles. De La Hoya, showed his dramatic speed and ability to fight at a distance as Ruiz simply looked confused as to what to do or what adjustment he should make. Ruiz recently fought Leo Santa Cruz. The final scores read 100-90 two times and 99-91 all in favor of De La Hoya.
Two-time Brazilian Olympian Everton Lopes (4-0, 1 KOs) was dropped twice, but escaped with a majority decision over previously undefeated Omar Tienda (13-1, 8 KOs) in a super lightweight fight. In a David Lemieux-esque performance by Tienda, the tough vet lost every round he didn’t knock Lopes down. Tienda dropped Lopes in the second and fifth as Lopes clearly had a skill advantage when the fight was contested at range. The final scores were 75-74 on two cards and 75-75.
