Fonfara, Kono win in fight of the year contenders on Spike TV
In a light heavyweight “fight of the year contender” Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16 KOs) out slugged a game Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOs) from UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois. In a back in forth bout with high output from each fighter saw Cleverly, whose nose was broken midway through the fight. Fonfara had the higher volume late as the fight came down to the final few rounds to determine a winner.In the end the judges saw it 115-113, 116-112, 116-112 all for Fonfara, who now is one of the bigger names in the division as he beat Julio Cesar Chaves Jr. earlier this year and now a former champion in Cleverly.
In the co-main event, WBA super flyweight champion Kohei Kono (31-8-1, 13 KOs) retained his title by unanimous twelve round decision as he defended his title against Koki Kameda (33-2, 18 KOs) on Friday night at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois. The bout was competitive from the start as both exchanged a large quantity of punches with Kono dropping Kameda in the second round. Kameda was deducted twice for low blows in the following round by an inept referee who over extended himself through out the fight. The bout was extremely competitive as it seemingly came down to the championship rounds.. In the end, Kono won by getting the better of the two and also benefited from the three points extra he received during the fight. The judges saw the bout 115-107, 116-108, 113-111 all for Kono.
