Golovkin outclasses Lemieux, Chocolatito shines on big stage
In an unification bout between the WBA/IBF middleweight champions, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) won a lopsided fight capsized by an eighth round TKO over David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KOs) on Saturday inside a sold out Madison Square Garden in New York City. Golovkin battered Lemieux from pillar to post never giving Lemieux hope as his jab kept Lemieux at distance. Golovkin floored Lemieux in the fifth and proceeded to hit him once he took a knee. The beating continued until the eighth round when a defenseless Lemieux was stopped in the corner after looking confused at the referee.
In co-main event WBC flyweight champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (44-0, 37 KOs) scored a ninth round TKO over Brian “The Hawaiian Punch” Viloria (36-5, 22 KOs). Gonzalez dropped Viloria in round three, which was the first time Viloria had ever hit the canvas before, the bout continued in an incredibly exciting and fairly even bout. Towards the later rounds, Viloria developed what looked like a hematoma below his eye and showed the wounds of war as he was stopped up right in the middle of the ninth round.
Heavyweight Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz (23-0, 20 KOs) scored a third round KO over Matias Ariel “El Matador” Vidondo (20-2-1, 18 KOs) as he dropped Vidondo round two, but finished the bout just seconds into the third frame. Middleweight Tureano Johnson (19-1, 13 KOs) scored a twelve round unanimous decision over Eamonn O’Kane (14-2-1, 5 KOs) in an IBF world title eliminator. Johnson dropped O’Kane twice in round one, but proceeded to go the duration. Johnson could very well be next in line for Gennady Golovkin. The judges scored the bout 118-108, 117-109, 119-107.
