Golovkin-Lemieux early PPV numbers coming in at 150K buys

Well, it might not have been the star-making performance we had hoped for Gennady Golovkin as early indications from FightHype.com have stated Gennady Golovkin-David Lemieux approximately 150,000 buys. Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated furthered the point stating that the number is with in the ballpark.

So what does this mean? Well, this would be the lowest HBO PPV since the ill-fated Bernard Hopkins-Chad Dawson bout which netted 50,000 buys. Worse, Tom Loeffler, Golovkin’s promoter, set the standard for success for the event at 200,000, a number that they’re more or less not going to reach. Even more troubling is some outlets are saying the 150,000 number is high and that the actual number could be closer to 125,000.

So as we move forward, the next question to understand is why is Golovkin such an attraction at live events, but seemingly unable to capture the imagination of viewers at home if forced to purchase. At the present time, we don’t know
