Povetkin, Lebedev win in week day Russia card

Heavyweight Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) scored a workman like twelfth round TKO over Mariusz Wach (31-2, 17 KOs) on Wednesday night at the Basket Hall Arena in Kazan, Russia. Povetkin who is now the #1 contender for WBC Heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder, suffered a cut that will delay the bout. Wach didn’t leave the bout with a scar as well as he suffered a cut as well that forced the doctor to stop the bout in final round.

Due to the cut on Povetkin WBC today approved another voluntary defense for Wilder in January meaning a late spring 2016 match of Wilder-Povetkin should be on the docket.

WBA cruiserweight champion Denis Lebedev (28-1, 21 KOs) scored an eighth round TKO over Lateef Kayode (21-1, 16 KOs) on Wednesday night at the Basket Hall Arena in Kazan, Russia. Kayode started strong outboxing Lebedev, but began to wear as he was dropped repeatedly late into the fight until Steve Smoger abruptly stopped the bout in the eighth round.

In the biggest upset of the night, Ola Afolabi (22-4-4, 11 KOs) scored a spectacular fifth round KO over Rakhim Chakhkiev (23-2, 18 KOs) on Wednesday night at the Basket Hall Arena in Kazan, Russia. Chakhkiev exerted his energy quickly in the fight as by the fifth round he found the canvas twice with the referee only ruling one a knockdown, but that knockdown also saw Chakhkiev unable to get up. Chakhkiev was knocked out cold laying first first.

Edward Trojanowski (23-0, 20 KOs) made sure IBF junior welterweight champion Cesar Cuenca (48-1, 2 KOs) would not match Floyd Mayweather’s record of 49-0 as he stopped him via  sixth round TKO. After both fighters tumbled to the canvas, Cuenca didn’t make any attempt to get as the force waved the bout off saying the Cuenca quit.
